Central Virginia schools match state average in annual accreditation
The central Virginia region matched the state average of 64 percent of schools receiving accreditation.
Twenty-three of Albemarle County's 24 schools were fully accredited. Only Yancey Elementary school missed the mark and was designated "provisionally accredited -- needs improvement."
That designation is given to schools that miss one or more of the state benchmarks by less than 20 percent.
Charlottesville City schools Johnson, Venable, Burnley-Moran and Greenbrier Elementary schools received full accreditation.
All other city schools were labeled "needs improvement."
Private grave of famous explorer's sibling disturbed
Albemarle County Police are investigating an attempted grave robbery at the privately-owned cemetery of the Lewis family.
The cement slab at the grave of Reuben Lewis, brother of famous explorer Meriwether Lewis, was moved.
The grave robbers dug down about 33 inches but did not reach any remains.
According to the Albemarle County Sheriff's office, the remains may have been disturbed sometime Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
Reuben Lewis died in 1844.
