University of California president to resign

The University of California president, who will best be remembered for proposing the dismissal of the SAT in the college admissions process, said Nov. 13 he will retire in October next year.

Richard C. Atkinson, 73, has been president of the nine-campus University of California system for the past 15 years. He will have served the longest term than most of the past 17 presidents.

Though Atkinson was unable to remove the SAT from entrance applications in 2001, his surprising request prompted changes to the actual exam.

The College Board changed the test so that it would better relate to high-school curricula.

"I don't think the changes to the SAT would have happened with the sort of speed that they did without Dick Atkinson," said David Ward, president of the American Council on Education.
