Protestors at living wage rally sentenced for Sept. 9 arrests
Two Charlottesville residents arrested during a Sept. 9 protest at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Main Street were sentenced yesterday morning at the Charlottesville District Court.
Andrew Holden and Jennifer Connor were both arrested after refusing to comply with a police request to leave the courtyard of the hotel during the protest.
Connor received a 30 day sentence, which the judge suspended, assigning Connor five hours of community service and two years probation instead.
Holden also received a suspended 30 day sentence with two years probation, but also will serve 30 days in jail for a similar arrest at the Omni Hotel.
Both Connor and Holden defended themselves during the trial.
Before the 9:30 a.m. trial, between 12 and 15 people gathered outside the court to protest, according to two eyewitnesses.
Fourth-year College student Kaitlyn Bauer, who attended the protest, said there was a decent showing at the trial as well.
"There were a fair number of people," in the courtroom, Bauer said.
Third-year College student Brian Hanlon estimated that about 20 supporters turned out to the trial.
"We filled two and a half rows in the courtroom," Hanlon said.
Friends and family mourn loss of deceased student
Memorial services for third-year Engineering student Jack Chen will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Money and King Vienna Funeral Home in Vienna, Va., at 11 a.m.
An internment will be held after the funeral at Fairfax Memorial Park.
