Professor earns University $1.5 million from award
In honor of his significant contributions to teaching and research, English Prof. Jerome McGann picked up a $1.5 million grant that will benefit the University.
Along with five other scholars nationwide, McGann was awarded the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's second annual Distinguished Achievement Award in the humanities.
Mellon presents its Distinguished Achievement awards to deserving individuals at institutions of higher education, but the grant money received by the honored institution is used to fund specific programs.
The grant will be used over three years to develop two digital projects that will work to boost critical study of humanities subject matter. McGann and his team of graduate students and fellow professors have been working on the projects.
McGann has helped to pioneer the use of computers for the purpose of scholarship in his field of specialty -- 19th and 20th century literature and culture.
McGann's work, "The Complete Writings and Pictures of Dante Gabriel Rossetti: A Hypermedia Research Archive," received particular commendation from the foundation.
