This spring, University women will have another option within the Greek community -- Theta Nu Xi, a multicultural service sorority.
The Pi Colony of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. hopes to appeal to University women with broad ethnic backgrounds and experiences.
The sorority hopes "to promote leadership, multiculturalism and self-improvement through academic excellence; involvement in and service to the campus and community; as well as being living examples of sisterhood across different races, cultures, religious backgrounds and lifestyles," according to its mission statement.
Fourth- year College student Bahareh Moradi founded the sorority in December 2002 with five other women from various ethnic backgrounds. The National Theta Nu Xi sorority was established in 1997, to which the University's colony belongs.
"We're all very happy that they made it," Multicultural Greek Council President Emmanuel Smadja said. "They had a difficult process establishing a multicultural organization here at U.Va. They're the first ones -- they were very persistent and service oriented; They really fit our profile. They were very professional."
Various service activities for Theta Nu Xi include working with the Boys & Girls Club, volunteering at the Salvation Army, posting multicultural facts around Grounds and assisting refugees in the Charlottesville community through an organization known as the International Rescue Committee."Whenever refugees move into area apartments, we provide them with necessary household items so they feelmore comfortable with the Charlottesville community," Theta Nu Xi Parliamentarian Danielle McCamey said.
Moradi said there is a significant need for multicultural organizations at the University.
"Diversity and multiculturalism are serious issues that need to be addressed," Moradi said. "Nearly 95 percent of those surveyed agreed that a multicultural service sorority such as Theta Nu Xi was needed."
The MGC was founded in 1999 and, according to Smadja, the MGC has doubled in size each year since its establishment. Its purpose consistently has been to promote harmony between all ethnic backgrounds in the Greek community.
Information sessions will be held tonight and Friday at 8 in Cabell 316 for those interested in rush events, which begin next week.
Theta Nu Xi encourages all girls interested in serving others and working in a multicultural environment to rush.
"We're not exclusive by any means," Moradi said. "That's what got me involved in this organization."
