False alarm disrupts morning traffic flow on Grounds
A fire alarm was activated on the West Lawn yesterday morning, causing fire trucks to rush to McCormick Road, according to Capt. Alan Norford of the Charlottesville Fire Department.
The false alarm sounded at 9:14 a.m.
The fire department determined that a malfunction caused the alarm to go off.
The trucks had cleared the scene and discovered the source of the problem by 10 a.m. The alarm has since been repaired.
"Whenever there is a false alarm, we will find out what caused that and correct it," said Cheryl Gomez, director of utilities for Facilities Management.
There are future plans for testing the alarm to ensure that it is working properly, she added.
Virginia conservation agencies try to respond to cuts in funding
Secretary of Natural Resources W. Tayloe Murphy Jr. said he will try to find restored funding for Virginia's environmental and conservation agencies.
The state legislature has proposed $1.2 million in cuts to critical pollution-control programs. Murphy said he will try to persuade the legislature to retain $1 million for the two agencies.
Gov. Mark R. Warner has proposed to provide the remaining funding in the second fiscal year of the 2002-2004 budget, which begins July 1.
