Car strikes pedestrian on Route 29

A driver traveling southbound on Emmet Street yesterday struck a pedestrian crossing from Lewis Mountain Road to Memorial Gym at 9:50 a.m., causing a traffic delay in the area due to emergency response and rubbernecking.

Ronnie Roberts, a Charlottesville Police Sgt. in the traffic division, said the driver had stopped for one pedestrian and then began to accelerate, not noticing a second pedestrian crossing the road.

The driver was only traveling five mph when his left front bumper struck the right thigh of the pedestrian. The pedestrian, who lay prone in the street until emergency personnel arrived, refused medical attention and walked away from the scene uninjured.

A ticket for "failure to yield to the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk" was issued to the driver.

Roberts said accidents involving pedestrians typically are a rare occurrence on Emmet Street.

"I see more people hitting telephone poles than pedestrians," he said.

U.Va. Graduate named Mitchell Scholar

John Keiss, who graduated from the University in 2001, will begin a year of postgraduate study in Northern Ireland this fall as a George J. Mitchell Scholar.

He will study comparative ethnic conflict at Queen's University in Belfast.

The scholarship, started in 1998, is named for Mitchell, a former U.S. Senator who played a significant role in promoting peace in Northern Ireland.

Keiss, a Phi Beta Kappa scholar who majored in political and social thought, has a long tradition of service to the Charlottesville community, providing the driving force behind several programs.

Keiss is a familiar face in Charlottesville's Blue Ridge Commons housing complex, where he works with neighborhood children, runs basketball practices and mediates disputes amongst neighborhood families.

He also has participated in summer mission projects in Los Angeles and the Philippines.

Keiss said he sees many parallels between his service activities and what he will study in Ireland as both relate to bringing persons from diverse backgrounds together.
