Public education advocates seek funding for colleges

Parents and educators gathered for a rally Monday morning at the bell tower on the grounds of the state Capitol in Richmond to seek school funding from the Virginia General Assembly.

About 1,000 education advocates from all over the state were expected to attend, including superintendents, members of local school boards, teachers and administrators.

Del. James H. Dillard II, R-Fairfax, promoted his one-cent sales tax increase at a news conference held just before the rally. The proposed legislation would raise the state sales tax from 3.5 percent to 4.5 percent, with half the money designated to fund public education from K-12 to the state's colleges and universities.

The Virginia Education Coalition, which represents several education groups encompassing parents, faculty, and administration throughout the state organized the rally.

The House Finance Committee was scheduled to consider the sales tax bill yesterday.

Officials urge heart test for 40 percent of U.S. adults

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Heart Association released new guidelines Monday recommending tests for millions of Americans at risk for heart disease. These tests look for signs of inflammation in the bloodstream, which can be a cause of heart attacks.

The AHA and CDC are the first health groups to suggest that inflammation testing should be a strong determinant of whether people need serious heart treatment.

Over the past few years, inflammation has been recognized as a cause of heart attacks, but until now doctors have been unsure how to test for the condition.
