Despite the snow, the Hillel Jewish Student Union held their annual elections Sunday afternoon in Newcomb's Commonwealth room.
Mother nature, however, had other plans. When the power went out in Newcomb Hall at 6:00 p.m., Hillel members cast votes for treasurer in the dark before they were evacuated.
After the blackout, the race for secretary was yet to be determined. Hillel members moved into a classroom in McIntire Hall to finish the remainder of the elections.
According to current President Kevin Hechtkopf, a new constitution ratified by Hillel last month consolidated many of the positions and goals of the organization. The new constitution reduced the nearly two dozen positions to just seven.
The constitution also states that the purpose of Hillel is to provide "opportunities for 'Jews to do Jewish with other Jews' by facilitating the Jewish experience."
"We tried to broaden the horizons of Hillel," Hechtkopf said. "We want to have a greater impact."
Hillel members elected second-year College student Rebecca Klimpl President. First-year College student Elizabeth Katz was elected the next executive vice president, joined by second-year College student Helene Sperber, the next membership vice president.
Hillel members also elected a new religious programming vice president, first-year College student Abby Bellows, and a new community relations and service vice president, third-year Engineering student Jackie Ainsztein. Rounding out the elections, first-year College student Jessica Crystal was elected treasurer and second-year College student Sarah Marcus was named secretary.
President-elect Kimpl said she was excited about the outcome of all of the elections.
"We're really looking forward to the next year so we can do a lot of great programs and events," she said.
The new executive board officially takes office March 2 after a two-week transition period.
