Police search for gunman

Albermarle Police are searching for a gunman who shot Deputy Steve Schifflect.

Schifflect was shot in the abdomen while inspecting a suspicious car. He was wearing his bullet proof vest at the time.

Bullet proof vests now are mandatory for uniformed county deputies.

Schifflect saw a man pacing just outside a Pet Food Discounters store while it was closed. When he asked the man to turn around, the man reportedly shot at him three to four times.

The Deputy never drew his weapon in retaliation because of a lack of time.

The wounded officer chased the gunman, but was not able to catch him.

The gunman remains at large.
