As a result of state budget cuts to funding for higher education, student leadership at the College of William and Mary has decided to lobby Gov. Mark R. Warner to increase the in-state tuition cap that has been in place since 1995.
William and Mary Student Assembly President Brian Cannon wrote a letter to Warner that has been circulating among student body presidents at public colleges and universities across the Commonwealth.
The letter discusses concerns with reduced course offerings, faculty retention, degree valuation and financial aid.
Cannon specifically requests the cap on in-state tuition increases be raised from 5 percent to 9 percent, which was the original recommendation of the budget proposed by the House of Delegates.
Once other student body presidents sign on to the initiative, it will be submitted to Warner for consideration.
