Local prevention group hosts forum for parents and children

In a forum entitled "Just Say Yes! Parents Building Healthy Youth Behavior," local speakers will discuss parental roles and responsibilities in helping their children avoid drug and alcohol abuse.

The event, which is sponsored by the Charlottesville-Albemarle Prevention Coalition, will take place Tuesday, April 29 from 6:30 to 8:00pm at ACAC Adventure Central.

Discussions will include personal stories from local parents who have dealt firsthand with criminal and civil liability issues relating to their children's actions.

Speakers will include Charlottesville Commonwealth Attorney Dave Chapman, University psychology prof. Winx Lawrence and social worker John Walters.

The University’s Orientation and Transition programs are vital to supporting first year and transfer students throughout their entire transition to college. But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
