Officials at Florida's Stetson University closed down the school's newspaper after some alumni, faculty and students reacted unfavorably to content in the paper's April Fool's Day issue.
The April Fool's issue included profanity and articles that critics charged were racist and advocated domestic violence.
Administrators closed the newspaper, which is known as The Reporter, for the remainder of the year. Locks were changed on the newspaper office last Wednesday as student staff members moved out their possessions.
Staff members disagreed with the decision to close the paper, saying that administrators unfairly fired those who were not involved in the editorial process.
Officials said they plan to restart thenewspaper in the fall and that staff members of The Reporter will be allowed to apply for new positions.
The Reporter began publishing in 1877 and is thought to be Florida's oldest college newspaper.
