The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention on Friday named University President John T. Casteen to its Presidents Leadership Group.
The PLG, formed in 1997, is made up of 45 college and university presidents, including the nine appointed this week. The council represents 27 states. Members are chosen for their dedication to the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse on their campuses.
The selection process includes personal statements from the presidents, letters of support and biennial review reports required by the federal government. New members demonstrated both past efforts at curbing drug and alcohol abuse and future plans to serve as leaders in the abuse prevention effort.
The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention is a national resource for institutions of higher education regarding the reduction of alcohol and other drug use at their schools. It is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education, with funding help from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest non-profit organization dedicated solely to health and health care issues.
University of Maryland System president William Kirwan already is a member of the Group. Donna Shalala, the president of new Atlantic Coast Conference member Miami was among those appointed last week.
