Hospital's theraputic bike first in Virginia

Area residents with spinal cord injuries now have a new treatment option. The Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center at the University Health System has purchased a Galaxy Cycle, a therapeutic bicycle which uses electrical impulses to stimulate patient's muscles.

The Kluge center is the first in Virginia to acquire the machine, making it one of 24 centers in the country to offer the treatment. In a press release, the manufacturer promises a number of potential benefits to patients with spinal cord injuries, including increased cardiovascular health and maintenance of both bone density and muscle mass which may lead to reduced likelihood of skin ulcerations
