College-bound high school students nationwide saw a six-point increase in average total SAT scores this year as compared to 2002 scores, according to results released today by the College Board.
The average SAT math score rose three points from 516 to 519 and the average verbal score rose three points from 504 to 507, for a national total average of 1026.
Virginia students' scores had a slightly higher increase than the national average, with the average total Virginian score rising eight points. In Virginia, the average math score rose four points from 506 to 510 and the average verbal score rose four points from 510 to 514, for a state total average of 1024.
Within the state, some public schools in Northern Virginia reported significant increases. Fairfax County students' scores increased 14 points to a total average score of 1110, well above the national average. Arlington County students rose 20 points to 1072.
The total average score in Maryland rose four points and in Washington, D.C. scores rose five points.
Although greater numbers of Latino and African-American students have been taking the SAT exam in recent years, scores for these ethnicites remain lower than those for their white and Asian peers.
