The Virginia field hockey team emerged this weekend from a tournament in Princeton, N.J. with mixed results, losing 3-1 to host Princeton Friday before salvaging a 2-1 overtime win over Drexel Sunday.
In Friday's game, the Cavaliers took an early lead before the Tigers struck back with three consecutive scores to take the contest. Sophomore midfielder Allie Flynn scored the Cavs' lone goal off a rebound in the 21st minute.
Against Drexel, Virginia again took an early lead on freshman midfielder Mia Link's first-half goal. Drexel tied it with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, sending the match to an extra session. In overtime, junior back Katie Jo Gerfen pounded home a corner for the victory. Virginia's defense was stellar against the Dragons, allowing only three shots and one short corner. Logan Carr added two saves against Drexel to her five against Princeton. The win over Drexel moved the team's record to 2-1. The Cavs next play Wednesday when they host Longwood at 7 p.m.
