The historic Martha Jefferson Hospital, located in downtown Charlottesville, will turn 100 soon.
The hospital has plans to celebrate their centennial from September to July.
The facilities' history is rife with heroism and quirks.
Always a forerunner of medical innovation locally, the hospital was the first in the area to possess an ambulance (horse-drawn), x-ray machine and CT scan.
Founded with a staff of nine, the hospital now employs 1,500 and serves close to 150,000 patients a year.
While the hospital will spend the year reminiscing on past achievements, the future is also bright for the facility which has plans to expand from its current 9-acre site in downtown Charlottesville to an 84-acre complex in Albemarle County.
