There will be some new sights and sounds at the soon-to-be completed parking garage near the intersection of Emmet Street and Ivy Road, according to Donley's Project Superintendent Scott Maulding.
Donley's Inc., the construction company which began work on the parking garage last November, now has begun constructing turn lanes onto Ivy Road this week. The construction company will begin working on Emmet Street turn lanes in the coming weeks, Maulding said.
"There are several types of [projects] that are going to be worked on related to the construction of the Ivy Road and Emmet Street garage," University spokesperson Carol Wood said. "The work will bring the potential for some traffic delays."
Wood said paving parts of Ivy Road and Rothery Road also may result in temporary traffic delays. However, Maudling said he does not expect traffic delays on either Emmet Steet or Ivy Road because of the construction.
Donley's still needs to test the fire alarm system in the parking garage, which will begin soon.
"We are starting" today, Maulding said. "The fire alarms will be tested intermittently throughout the day."
Maulding said he does not think nearby residents will be disturbed by the fire alarms.
"I don't think any residents will be able to hear them," he said.
According to Wood, the construction site will be performing other tasks that will produce noise in the coming days.
"The kind of work will include drilling and earth moving that will account for some periods of prolonged noise," she said.
Donley's will be completing the "finishing touches" on the parking garage over the next few weeks, Maulding said.
The construction project has suffered numerous setbacks because of the poor weather conditions over that past year.
"The Virginia weather and the hurricane have been very challenging," Maulding said. "Twenty-seven inches of rain above normal -- when you are doing construction, that is hard to work around."
Construction for the parking garage began almost a year ago and is slated to be completed in mid-November, said David Sweet, senior project manager of the Universities Facilities Planning and Construction Department.
According to Sweet, the garage is likely to be completed in time for football games against Virginia Tech and Georgia State on Nov. 22 and Nov. 29, respectively.
