University history Prof. and College Dean Edward L. Ayers introduced a new, community-based perspective to the historical conversation on the Civil War. His recently published book, "In the Presence of Mine Enemies: War in the Heart of America, 1859-1863" chronicles the everyday lives and views of white and black residents of two farming communities; one in Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania.
Ayers's research tracks residents of each region throughout pre-war tensions, the secession of the South and the early stages of the Civil War and offers the perspectives of farmers, merchants, politicians and ministers. The book is published by W.W. Norton.
