Senate votes to repeal media rules

The Senate voted 55-40 Tuesday to undo changes to media ownership rules that were mandated by the Federal Communications Commission. The rules apply to radio stations, newspapers and television stations and allow a single company to control up to 45 percent of a given market, up from the previous 35 percent.

The House still must pass the bill, an outcome Washington insiders deem unlikely.

Major media companies maintain they need the new rules in order to compete with new technology such as the internet and satellite and cable television without charging for their services.
