The University opened a new wing of Fontaine Research Park yesterday.
The new facility features an open magnetic resonance imaging system, the first to be operated at the University.
MRI technology is used to image the body without radiation. Unlike traditional "tunnel" MRI units which may produce claustrophobia or anxiety in some patients, open MRI machines allow the patient to see in all directions and to have others nearby.
The new building also will house a neurosurgery clinic, endocrinology and metabolism services and the diabetes education and management program.
Space for digestive health and neurologyclinics will be made in future expansions.
Leading University figures Dr. Arthur Garson, vice president and dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Darracott Vaughn, chairman of the Medical Center Operating Board and Leonard Sandridge, University executive vice president and chief operating officer all attended the opening ceremony.
Tours of the new building were made available yesterday after the opening ceremony.
