Virginia college students await resumption of classes

Although University classes resumed Monday, other Virginia schools remain closed in the wake of Hurricane Isabel.

The College of William & Mary is closed until further notice and the administration encourages students not to return to campus until notified. The college canceled its fall break to provide make-up days for missed classes.

At the University of Richmond all classes and campus activities are cancelled until Thursday, Sept. 25. Residence halls and dining services will re-open Wednesday.

Hampton University in the Tidewater area re-opens Monday but classes are canceled until Tuesday. Christopher Newport University in Newport News is closed until future notice. Old Dominion University in Norfolk will not resume classes until Monday afternoon.

The colleges and universities cite power outages in dormitories and other buildings as well as debris and damage to their campuses as factors forcing them to remain shut down.
