Virginia GOP elects first female chair

On Saturday, Kate Obenshain Griffen was unanimously voted into office as chairwoman of Virginia's Republicans. Griffen, a 34 year-old Winchester housewife and mother of four, is the first female state party head. She won the position after the withdrawal of opponent Richard F. Neel, Jr. and with the support of Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore and U.S. Sen. George Allen.

Griffen succeeds former state GOP Chairman Gary R. Thomson. Thomson resigned in August after pleading guilty to a federal misdemeanor charge in connection with illegal eavesdropping on Democratic Party conference calls.

The Daily Progress reported that Griffen referred to the scandal in her remarks, and promised the party would not become paralyzed by it.

Griffen's supporters said she will act as a unifier, providing a new dynamic, and drawing more women into the GOP.
