Gov. Mark R. Warner on Friday endorsed a congressional plan to look into widening I-66 from Rosslyn through Falls Church with the addition of a third west-bound lane.
U.S. Reps. Frank R. Wolf and Thomas M. Davis III, proposed the addition this summer, claiming the lane could be built without tearing down nearby homes and estimating the project might cost as little as $18 million.
Warner said he will accept $1 million in federal money offered to study ways to improve west-bound traffic. The House of Representatives approved $1 million on Sept. 4 for a study. The Senate has yet to give final approval.
Arlington County officials oppose any widening of I-66, which they say will adversely affect neighborhoods along the highway and is unlikely to provide long-term benefits. They have, however, agreed to cooperate with the study.
County Board Chairman Paul Ferguson told the Washington Post that the county would consider lawsuits to prevent construction should the study conclude that the highway should be widened.
Business groups, in contrast, responded warmly to Warner's endorsement.
