Officer Carl Graves, a 20-year veteran of the police force, was dismissed from the Albermarle County Police Department Oct. 14, the department announced Thursday.
Police Chief John Miller made the decision to terminate Graves' employment with the department after reviewing the results of an internal investigation initiated after Graves' Sept. 18 arrest for misdemeanor assault and battery.
Graves allegedly assaulted a 24-year-old woman during an argument about a broken furnace, which Graves was supposed to have fixed.
Graves, 54, had been suspended without pay following the woman's complaint.
Graves previously was arrested for allegedly threatening his wife and another family member with a loaded gun in 2000. Misdemeanor charges of assault and battery and brandishing a firearm stemming from the incident later were dropped and he agreed to undergo a psychiatric evaluation in addition to attending anger management classes and counseling.
