Second-year College student Carson Ward remains hospitalized and in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center as a result of head injuries sustained in an altercation outside the Sigma Chi fraternity house early Saturday morning.
University Medical Center spokesperson Marguerite Beck said yesterday afternoon she could "release no other information at this time."
Two Sigma Chi brothers and fourth-year College students, Kurt P. Rupprecht and John P. Selph, have been charged with malicious wounding as a result of the altercation.
Although Inter-Fraternity Council President Ryan Ewalt already has confirmed that IFC will not be conducting an investigation regarding the incident since it was neither actually in a fraternity house or a fight between two fraternity members, University Judiciary Committee Chair Alexis Gregorian said charges may be brought.
Gregorian said she can not confirm or deny if such charges have been brought against Rupprecht and Selph, the two students accused in alleged assault of Ward.
"Judging from what I've heard, it sounds like a standard I violation," she said. "Depending on the circumstances, it's the most obvious standard to file."
Gregorian added that the trial would be confidential unless the accused chose a public hearing.
There is no typical sanction or punishment for a standard I violation. Gregorian said the sanction depends on the violation, the severity, the accuseds' attitudes and what happens as a result of outside criminal proceedings.
Gregorian would not comment on what sanction could be suspected from such a case.
When asked if expulsion could be the result of a UJC trial, she said expulsion was a possibility though "it is not a very common occurrence."
