Albermarle County investigators named a cooking grease and creosote buildup on a wood-burning stove as the cause of Monday night's three-alarm fire at Farmington Country Club.
The fire was first detected at 6:30 p.m. Monday. It is estimated to have caused upward of $100,000 in damage to the private country club. It took more than 50 county fire fighters several hours to put out the blaze, which caused the closing of the club's main dining room and its golf club. In order to accommodate members, the club has opened the formal dining room to members. That dining room uses a second kitchen that did not suffer damage in the fire and it will be used for the time it takes to make repairs on the damaged kitchen and dining room, at least a month. The majority of damage reportedly was smoke and water damage, rather than fire damage.
