Sarah Lawrence College recently announced standardized admission tests will be optional for applicants beginning with those applying to matriculate in fall 2006.
School officials are the first to ascribe their decision to make the test optional to concerns over the format of the New SAT. The New SAT will be administered to high school students graduating in 2006 and will include a third component -- a writing test.
The school claims adding another test to the SAT will not make the test a better measure of a student's ability to perform in a college environment. A 25-minute timed writing session is not reflective of writing required in a collegiate setting, a Lawrence official told The New York Times.
Test taking courses and private tutors also give more affluent students an unfair advantage, the official said.
Sarah Lawrence already gives the test a low weight when considering applicants, according to school officials.
Sarah Lawrence is a small, liberal arts college in Bronxville, New York. The school was founded in 1928 by William Lawrence to honor his wife Sarah.
