Cavalier Daily elects new managing board

The Cavalier Daily staff elected a new ensemble of writing, photography and production staff members to serve on its 115th managing, senior and junior boards Saturday in Jefferson Hall.

The staff elected Chris Wilson, a third-year College student majoring in English, to serve as editor-in-chief for the coming two semesters. Wilson, a Charlottesville native, previously was managing editor in the 114th managing board of The Cavalier Daily.

Wilson said he aims to create "more flexible, versatile" newspaper with as wide a range of content as possible.

"We are constantly discussing diversity of coverage in this newspaper," Wilson said. "I feel that it is an important issue for us to continually address in order for us to put out the best newspaper possible."

Staff members also elected Becky Krystal, a third-year English major from Richmond, Va., as the paper's new executive editor.

Kara Rowland, a third-year Government major from Annandale, Va., will serve as the next managing editor.

The staff elected Josh Goodman, a third-year government major from Arlington, Va., to serve as chief financial officer.

Leah Nylen, a second-year College student from Springfield, Va., completes the five-member managing board. She will serve as operations manager for the coming year.

The staff then elected a Senior Board.

Third-year College students Alexis Unkovic, a foreign affairs major from Pittsburgh, Pa., and Laura Good, an English major from Lancaster, Pa., will fill the positions of assistant managing editors.

Jonathan Soma, a third-year College student and cognitive sciences major from Spotsylvania, Va., will fill the position of online manager for the second year in a row. First-year College student Chris Belyea from Montepelier, Va., will serve as the next director of information technology and Erin McCabe, a fourth-year College student and sociology major from Virginia Beach, Va., will fill the position of advertising manager.

The staff also elected a slate of editors for each department who will comprise the Junior Board.

Third-year College students Natasha Altamirano and Riley McDonald were elected News editors. Maggie Bowden and Patrick Harvey, both second-years in the College, will fill the positions of Opinion editors. Second-year College students Melissa Silverman and Sean McLernon will serve as Sports editors.

Second-year College students Elizabeth Katz and Meghan Moran will be Life editors for the coming term. Second-year College student Jason Amirhadji will serve as Focus editor.

Third-years Leslie Williams and Mariko Fritz-Krockow, both students in the College, will work as Arts & Entertainment editors. The staff re-elected third-year College student Sreejit Nair as Health & Science editor. Second-year College students Samantha Klein and Gwen McCarter will fill the positions of Nation/World editors.

Third-year College students Peter Dunn and Alex Sonneborn were selected as photo editors, while third-year Brian Gawalt and second-year Angelique Sklavounos, both Engineering students, were chosen as Graphics editors. Second-year Engineering student Chris Gibson and first-year College student Stephanie Shaw will work as production editors.

The outgoing departmental editors also appointed associate editors in their respective departments.

In the News Department, Anthony LaMesa, a second-year College student, will work as senior associate editor. Third year College students Jayni Foley and Shannon Sturcken, second-year College student Corinne Shamy and first-year College students A.J. Frank, Matt Galati, Sarah Gatsos, Christopher Jones, Timothy Lee, Kathleen Meyers and Lauren Pappa will serve as News associate editors.

Opinion associate editors for the upcoming term are second-year Engineering student Daniel Bagley, second-year College student Elliot Haspel and first-year College student Whitney Blake.

In the Sports Department, second-year College student Chris Kelly will work as Gameday Editor. Fourth-year Architecture student Jonathan Evans was chosen for the position of Sports associate editor, in addition to third-year College student Becky Piedel, second-year College students Chris Kelly and Bayless Parsley and first-year College students Joey Mancini, Elizabeth Newell, Clayton O'Toole and Jeremy Root.

Second-year College students Chad Anderson, Cliff Roberts and Brett Meeks will work as associate editors for the Life department, in addition to first-year College students Defne Gunay and Hannah Wolf. First-year College student Preston Gisch and third-year College student Mindy Longanecker will work as associate editors for the Arts & Entertainment department.

Third-year Engineering student Heliodor Jalba will serve as photo associate editor along with second-year College student Scott Keith, second-year College student Danny Neckel and first-year College student Stephen Thiele.

First-year Engineering student Peter Siy was appointed senior associate editor for the Production department. Third-year Commerce student Diane Oh and third-year College student Abby Lynch will serve as associate editors.
