The Oregon Student Public Interest Research group recently reported that the average college student spends $800 on textbooks every academic year, with the average textbook costing more than $100, The Dartmouth reported. Prices have increased since the 1996-1997 academic year when the average student spent $650 on textbooks.
OSPIR attributes the increase to book bundling and unnecessarily frequent new editions. Oftentimes, students must buy textbooks attached to instructional CDs or study guides without the option of only buying the textbook required.
In recent years, reprinted textbooks have had fewer and fewer modifications from one edition to the next. As a result, students are unable to buy used, older and cheaper editions.
