Looking toward the White House

With the Democratic primaries in full swing and the eventual nominee still undecided, President Bush has been stockpiling his resources in preparation for November's campaign.

At the end of 2003, he had raised $132.7 million, according to a finance report filed with the Federal Election Commission. The figure is three times that of the best-financed Democratic candidate, Howard Dean, who has since spent most of his campaign funds.

Historically, incumbents have fared well in races for the White House. Since 1960, only three sitting presidents have run for reelection and lost. The father of the current chief executive, President George H. W. Bush, was unsuccessful in his bid for a second term 12 years ago.
