Nicholas J. Garber, University professor of civil engineering and former chair of the civil engineering department, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering Friday.
Garber was one of 76 new members and 11 new foreign associates elected to the NAE, according to a press release.
"It's not only an honor for me, but for the department and also the University as a whole," Garber said.
With the election of these new members, the NAE now boasts a total membership of 2,174 in the United States alone.
Membership is awarded to those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice," according to the press release.
Prospective members are chosen by their peers in the NAE.
The NAE release reported that its members elected Prof. Garber "for [his] significant contributions to the design and analysis of algorithms and for leadership in computer science and engineering."
