IGC hosts third annual Greek Awards ceremony

The 2004 Greek Awards Ceremony was held yesterday at Old Cabell Hall, honoring Greek achievement throughout this past year.

The third annual event was sponsored by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and the Inter-Greek Committee, featuring representatives from the Black Fraternal Council, Inter-Fraternity Council, Inter-Sorority Council and the Multicultural Greek Council.

"The event is an expression of the purpose of the IGC -- to promote cooperation among the four councils," said Aaron Laushway, associate dean of students and director of fraternity and sorority life.

Award recipients are selected by the IGC based on nomination forms completed by each chapter, said Ann Thorne, an undergraduate intern in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

The representatives of the IGC are asked to step out of their roles as chapter members and into the impartial role of committee representative.

Melody Han, MGC President and Alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority member, received awards for outstanding contributions to the University and MGC person of the year.

"I am a little overwhelmed," Han said. "At the end of the day, it's nice to get a little recognition."

Darren Kelly, former BFC co-chair and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. member, was honored with BFC person of the year and BFC outstanding chapter president.

"It was good to see all of the hard work by the Greek community," Kelly said. "We're not just here to party, but to promote such qualities as achievement and diversity."

Ryan Ewalt, former IFC president and Phi Delta Theta fraternity member, and Cahill Zoeller, former ISC president and Phi Mu sorority member, also received person of the year awards.

The IFC's Phi Gamma Delta fraternity received awards for outstanding philanthropy and IFC outstanding chapter for its endeavors throughout the year, including its "Run Across Virginia" event as well as its efforts to regain its charter.

"Our guys have put in a lot of work -- we are grateful that we succeeded," Phi Gamma Delta President Chris Anderson said.

The ISC's Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority also received an award for outstanding philanthropy in support of the American Cancer Society.

The BFC's Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the MGC's Lambda Theta Alpha sorority also received the awards for Outstanding Chapter.

Thorne said she was pleased with the success of the event.

"Those receiving awards were very appreciative," Thorne said. "I hope this event will encourage the chapters to work in the future to reach the next level."
