Mock trial team competes at national level for first time

The University's mock trial team competed at the National Championship Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, for the first time in its history.

Both teams sent by the University finished in the top 15 in a field of 64 teams. One team placed 12th and the other 14th.

Two University students also received individual recognition. Mock Trial President Lauren Park was named an All-American Attorney for the prosecution, and Mock Trial Secretary Samantha Bateman received an All-American Attorney award for the defense.

The teams competed in the regional tournament at the University of Maryland to qualify for the national tournament. The University was the only school in the region to send two teams to nationals.

The University's student-run team was one of few programs at the national competition conducted solely as an extracurricular activity, said coach Dan Shapiro, a second-year Law student.

"Mock trial is becoming very good, so now we need to get the University to back us as an academic program," Shapiro said. "There is no reason why we shouldn't be one of the best programs in the country."
