IFC holds open house

The Inter-Fraternity Council held its first ever fall open house Friday night for all men interested in rushing a fraternity during formal rush this spring.

IFC fraternities participated in the open house event, held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, IFC Spokesperson Alex Berrang said.

"It gave first-year men an earlier chance to become acquainted with the IFC Greek system, so that they can make a more educated decision in the spring," IFC President David Bowman said.

The event was meant for educational purposes -- as a way to publicize who the IFC is and how they operate, Bowman said.

"It was a non-alcoholic event that gave interested men the chance to get to know the brothers and the houses during the day," Berrang said.

No alcohol was allowed at the event, as formal rush is a dry process, and all of the same rules applied.

"Some fraternities provided food and soda," Berrang said. "Guys could come by, grab a bite to eat and get to know the brothers."

Berrang added that despite the addition of this event, the IFC's rules regarding dirty rush will not change.

"Our policies towards dirty rush are very strict and still apply," Berrang said.

IFC Membership Intake Official Miles Clements said that although exact numbers of men who participated and subsequently registered for formal rush have not yet been compiled, he was pleased with the participation he observed first-hand Friday night.

"We're optimistic with the turnout and happy with the numbers," Clements said.

Bowman explained that this event was similar in format to the first night of the formal rush process, and that it was in addition to, rather than in place of, the open house that will take place in the spring.

Bowman said the IFC targeted first years more in its publicity efforts, though the event was open to all University men interested in the IFC Greek system.

IFC officials said they were pleased with the event and look forward to next year.

"Hopefully it went well, was well-received, and hopefully next year we can expand the event," Berrang said.
