AS SECOND semester begins to wind down, first-year engineering students enrolled in the Science, Technology, and Society 101 course are beginning work on "Katrinasim." Katrinasim is a culminating project that engages students with a real-world example of the effect of technology on society, and vice-versa. Students are divided into 15 stakeholder groups, ranging from FEMA to the Army Corps of Engineers to the city's gaming industry, and required to look at the New Orleans relief effort through the lens of their given organization.
It seems obvious that having engineering students learn about the role of their chosen career path in society has numerous benefits. Yet as important as it is for them to apply their knowledge of technical systems to the real world, it is even more critical that college students
