At first I was a little perturbed to find that an article on Student Council’s new University Unity Project featured only the quotations and perspectives of the two principle organizers of the project - committee head Rob Atkinson and Student Council President Matt Schrimper. My perturbation turned into a sense of ethical dismay when I saw, too, that these proponents were featured in a guest viewpoint about the project in the same issue. The dismay turned into downright irritation when the project was again featured in a soft-hitting assessment as the lead editorial, the perspective of the paper’s Managing Board.
I had to ask myself: Was it a slow news day or were people just being lazy?
Perspectives on the project itself aside — for my part I think it certainly has potential — journalistic integrity is lost when the same point of view on the same project is pasted across three of the paper’s six pages in one day. I hope that The Cavalier Daily will demand more from its reporters and from our Student Council by offering insightful, critical perspectives, rather than the party line. And I hope that it will show more respect for the wider student body by searching out a wider variety of stories that effect us at the University.
