The Cavalier Daily
Serving the University Community Since 1890

The one and only

AS A PRELUDE to what will undoubtedly be an abysmal column, I will warn anyone reading this that I am a math major who has never written anything for The Cavalier Daily before. During my time at The Cavalier Daily, I have only worked on the business side of things. Thus, I’m sure this column will be terribly written, and I sincerely apologize to the unlucky individuals who are forced to edit it. With all of that said, I promise I will not torture anyone with my horrible attempts at creative writing; instead, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the people who have helped me over the course of the last nine months.

My time at The Cavalier Daily, and at this University for that matter, has been short. As a person who enjoys change and a constant shifting of environment, I would have to say that The Cavalier Daily’s ability to keep me involved since my first semester at the University is a testament to how much I have enjoyed working there. Who could forget all those uncountable hours down in the deep, dark depths of the Newcomb Hall basement? Or the many sleepless nights trying to juggle homework and a full-time job? I’m sure I speak on behalf of many members of The Cavalier Daily’s 119th staff when I say that I am relieved yet saddened that it’s over. The joys of my experience were made possible only by the constant teamwork and support of several individuals, and I would like to extend a special thank you to them now.

First of all, I want to thank the business and advertising staffs. Maintaining almost $200,000 in assets, raking in almost $600,000 of yearly advertising revenue and controlling just under $500,000 of annual expenses is an impressive task that you all perform marvelously, despite the fact that the rest of the staff is probably oblivious to what it is you all do. While running a business is typically reserved for full-time professionals, you all keep The Cavalier Daily, Inc. in business. Without all of your hard work, my job would have been completely unmanageable and I, more than anyone, appreciate the work you do on a daily basis.

I personally would like to thank the entire staff of The Cavalier Daily. I know I was still a relative newcomer when I joined the Managing Board, and, even now, my time at The Cavalier Daily is dwarfed by many. Despite that, everyone I encountered in our lovely basement has always made me feel completely at home, whether it was by giving me a hug or by making valiant attempts at pronouncing my name.
I would also like to thank Toni Munch, Bonnie Ford, Jennifer Bonenfant, Melissa Gormes, Ann Schare and everyone else at Alumni Hall who has and always will extend a helping hand to The Cavalier Daily. You care for us more than any bank could, and your quick assistance, always just a phone call away, has solved many problems during my term. The Cavalier Daily, Inc., including myself, is incredibly grateful for each and every one of you.

Finally, I would like to thank the (now former) Managing Board.  I’ll always remember the unrivaled hilarity of Steve, the cave that Daniel and I shared, the Nerf-Gun fights with Andrew, the awesome power of Kristin during ledits and the day Elizabeth first got me involved with The Cavalier Daily. Perhaps it was because I found my niche, or perhaps because we were forced to spend 60 hours per week together, you all have become some of my closest friends and I’m excited to see where life takes us all.

To Tyler, I know you will make an excellent ads manager and will keep the money coming in. To Connie, I am confident you will carry on the job with proficiency and dedication. To Andrew, despite all of my teasing, I know you will lead The Cavalier Daily well as it progresses into another year. Last but not least, to the 120th Cavalier Daily staff: I wish you all good luck!
