Guide ranks University physicians among best

Castle Connolly publication aims to help patients find top specialists, quality healthcare

Forty-seven University Hospital doctors were recognized in the most recent edition of Castle Connolly Medical’s “America’s Top Doctors” guide, which annually names more than 5,000 of the country’s top specialists.

“The purpose of the guide,” founder John Connolly said, “is to educate people so they can find the best healthcare available.”

There are about 720,000 practicing doctors in the United States right now, Connolly said. The Castle Connolly research team interviewed about 230,000 doctors to identify the best physicians across the nation.

He noted that the guide is meant for people afflicted with diseases that require the care of a specialist. Thus, doctors included in the publication are experts in certain areas, not primary care doctors.

Connolly admitted the existence of flaws in the guide because it is difficult to predict how successful a doctor will be with his or her patients. The research team receives help from doctors already on the list though. The guide expands each year through a peer-review system, so doctors chosen one year can nominate their colleagues the next year.

Even with all the research that goes into the guide, however, it still is possible in a national guide to overlook top-notch doctors, Connolly said.

“There will always be excellent regional and local doctors that we miss,” he said. “We don’t claim to find everyone. We want to make sure that people aren’t just randomly choosing a name.”

University Hospital spokesperson Megan Rowe said it is an honor to have a large number of physicians from the hospital identified in the guide.

“It speaks to the dedication they bring to U.Va.,” she said.

This is the eighth edition of “America’s Top Doctors.”
