Helping the helpers

With an aging population, steps must be taken to avoid an economic epidemic among caregivers

FORMER First Lady Rosalyn Carter has been quoted as saying, "There are only four kinds of people in this world - those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who need caregivers."

Mrs. Carter understood that at the heart of the U.S. health care system is the family caregiver - an unheralded champion who provides relentless service to the elderly and sick. Throughout the course of the 21st century, the United States has undeniably become a nation of caregivers. Every year, approximately 50 million Americans care for a sick or elderly loved one or friend. Annually, these caregivers contribute an estimated 37 billion hours of unpaid service.
