Collegiate newspapers should be the go-to source for important local news

LAST WEEKEND, Katie Thisdell received the Virginia Press Association's First Amendment Award. Thisdell, until recently, was the editor of James Madison University's student newspaper, The Breeze.

According to the Virginia Press Association's website, the award, which dates to 2007, "is given to journalists, newspapers or citizens who, in an extraordinary way, seek to advance, defend or preserve the First Amendment."

But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
