The Virginia volleyball team split its matches against North Carolina and N.C. State this past weekend to improve to an 8-11 overall record and a 2-7 mark in ACC play.
Playing the Tar Heels (16-4, 8-1 ACC) only hours before the North Carolina basketball team's annual "Midnight Madness" event Friday evening, the Cavaliers dropped three sets to fall 3-0 against their border-state rival in front of 10,195 screaming fans. Senior outside hitter Simone Asque led the unsuccessful squad offensively with 10 kills, while freshman libero Sydney Shelton tallied a season-high 17 digs.
Saturday evening, Virginia dropped the first set against the Wolfpack (14-8, 2-7 ACC) before collecting three straight sets to earn the 3-1 victory in front of a significantly smaller audience. Asque notched 23 kills for another 20-kill performance, while junior middle blocker Jessica O'Shoney recorded 11 kills of her own. Defensively, sophomore libero Emily Rottman and Shelton contributed 18 and 15 digs, respectively.
The Cavaliers welcome Clemson and Georgia Tech to Charlottesville this weekend, seeking their first two-win weekend of regular season play.
