Cavs seek fifth-straight victory

The No. 14 (USA Today) Virginia baseball team seeks its fifth straight win at home against Liberty today after a three-game sweep of Monmouth last weekend.

The Cavaliers (5-1-1, 0-1 ACC) have developed a peculiar dual identity as both targeted national powerhouse and embattled underdog in the still-infant season.

Since Brian O'Connor became the team's coach in 2004, Virginia has compiled a 377-131-2 record and is one of just 13 teams to make NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last eight years. Yet the ACC preseason coaches' poll pegged the Cavaliers as just the third-best squad in the ACC Coastal, and through the first few weeks expectations remain tempered for a revamped roster which believes the lack of preseason plaudits is useful motivation.
