Entering Tuesday night, four of the Virginia men’s lacrosse team’s six wins on the season had been decided by one goal. But against VMI, the Cavaliers were finally able to roll, and they rolled big.
Behind hat tricks from senior attackman Owen Van Arsdale, junior midfielder Greg Coholan and freshman attackman Mike D’Amario, No. 8 Virginia (7-2, 0-2 ACC) marched past VMI (0-10, 0-3 Southern Conference), 17-3, in Lexington, Virginia.
Van Arsdale broke the ice, scoring the game’s first goal just under five-minutes into the contest. Senior midfielder Tyler German, sophomore attackman Joe French and Coholan each added tallies to give Virginia a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Cavaliers exploded in the second quarter to the tune of seven goals. Senior midfielder Ryan Tucker and sophomore midfielder A.J. Fish each got in on the action, while D’Amario scored his first career goal with 2:41 remaining before halftime.
Virginia used four more goals, including the first collegiate tally by sophomore midfielder Jacob Dean, to take a 15-0 lead after three quarters.
D’Amario and French each added fourth quarter strikes for the Cavaliers, ending Virginia’s scoring with 10:43 to play. VMI’s three goals all came in the final 2:57.
Sophomore goalie Matt Barrett, who played just the first half, finished with eight saves. Freshman goalie Will Railey and junior goalie Dan Marino finished the game in the third and fourth quarter, respectively.
Virginia will next face Richmond Saturday in Klöckner Stadium. Opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
