The Charlottesville City Police Department is currently investigating a Thursday “peeping Tom” incident at the Kroger in Barracks Road Shopping Center.

A woman shopping on Thursday morning noticed a man looking over her stall in the store’s restroom. After being spotted, the man left the store and drove away.

Currently, the supermarket chain is complying with police in the investigation by providing surveillance tapes, Kroger Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Allison McGee said.

“We have made a surveillance tape available to the police,” McGee said.

In response to the incident, the store has issued higher surveillance.

“Kroger is increasing its own surveillance of the entire store,” McGee said.

Third-year College student Effie Smith said the incident may affect her shopping habits and attitude towards fellow customers at Kroger.

“Definitely, I’d feel very uncomfortable,” Smith said. “I’d be very wary of the people who shop there.”

Second-year College student Zach Perkins disagreed and said the incident would not keep him from shopping at the store due to its convenient proximity to Grounds.

“Although I am creeped out and it makes me [uncomfortable], it doesn’t deter me away from the store,” Perkins said. “That’s definitely the hub for if I need to get something off-Grounds.”

The incident’s close proximity to Grounds is not a deterrent from shopping at the Barracks Road Shopping Center, Smith said.

“I think it was just one occurrence,” Smith said. “These kinds of things happen even on Grounds, so it’s not something I can live in fear of.”

Students shopping off-grounds will likely remain generally more alert following the event, Perkins said.

“The fact that that’s something that's happening very close is concerning and I’ll be very wary of it,” Perkins said.

The Charlottesville Police Department did not respond to request for comment on the investigation.
