Sophomore Taylor Ziemer scored the Cavaliers' lone goal against East Carolina.

After a long double-overtime match against NC State Friday, No. 5 Virginia went into double overtime again Sunday afternoon. This time, the Cavaliers played East Carolina in the 110-minute contest, and the result was a 1-1 tie.

Similar to its struggle to find the back of the net in the scoreless match against the Wolfpack (7-1-1, 0-0-1 ACC), Virginia (5-2-2, 0-0-1 ACC) had difficulty in making the most of scoring opportunities against the Pirates (5-2-2), and only finished one of the 19 shots taken.

Scoring the lone goal for Virginia was sophomore forward Taylor Ziemer. Ziemer scored in the 36th minute of play when she tapped in a cross from senior forward Veronica Latsko, marking Ziemer’s third goal of the season. Ziemer is the current leading scorer for Virginia.

Although Virginia had the lead for most of the game, the Pirates evened things up with under 10 minutes left in the match when junior forward Courtney Cash picked up her fifth goal of the season.

With neither team able to find the back of the net in the additional 20 minutes of overtime, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Cavaliers return to Klöckner Stadium to host Miami for their second ACC match of the season Thursday night at 8 p.m. When the two teams met last year, Miami (4-2-0) handed the Cavaliers a 2-1 loss. After Thursday night’s game, Virginia will host No. 10 North Carolina Sunday afternoon.
