The Virginia rowing team’s season concluded this weekend with a fifth-place team finish at the NCAA Championships this past weekend.

The No. 7 Cavaliers brought three boats to Sarasota, Fla., with each boat advancing to the A/B semifinals after the first day of competition. The Varsity Eight and the Varsity Four then went on to the Petite Finals, while the Second Varsity Eight advanced to the Grand Final.

The Second Varsity Eight — made up of senior coxswain Adi Hendlin, sophomore Isabella Strickler, sophomore Reilly White, junior Christina Berchtold, senior Anna Fairs, junior Alex Slabbert, junior Martine van den Boomgaard, senior Morgan Rosts and freshman Carrie Warner — battled to a third-place finish after posting a 6:28.264. With that time, the Cavaliers just edged out Michigan, who crossed the finish line in 6:28.576. Coming in first place in the event was Washington, with a time of 6:21.081 and California came in second after a 6:27.201 finish.

Meanwhile, the Varsity Eight came in seventh place, as did the ACC Crew of the Year, the Varsity Four. The Varsity Eight had a time of 6:28.633 to win the petite final, while the Varsity Four recorded a 7:14.594 to also win their petite final.

As a team, Virginia, who entered the weekend after winning their ninth straight ACC Championship, recorded 104 points to make for a fifth place finish. Leading the standings was California — who finished in first with 130 points —  followed by Washington, Texas and then Stanford, who also had 104 points.

This year’s performance was a great improvement from last year’s 11th-place finish. At the regatta last year, the Varsity Eight came in 10th place, the Second Varsity Eight came in 12th place and the Varsity Four came in tenth.

The Cavaliers lose a great deal of talent with team co-captains Ali Zwicker and Anna Fairs, Alice Darry, Hendlin, Mary Beth Greer, Jane Hudson, Rosts and Ellie Stewart all graduating.
