The Virginia women’s basketball team lost 91-66 on the road at Michigan State in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game Wednesday night.
The Spartans (5-1) started hot, making their first five shots of the game to open on a 12-2 run. Michigan State then scored the final 13 points of the first quarter to take a 25-4 lead. The Cavaliers (2-5) shot only 14.3 percent from the field in the first quarter.
Virginia then hit their first five shots of the second quarter, outscoring Michigan State 22-21 over the course of the period. However, the Cavaliers were still down 46-26 at the half.
The Michigan State lead was 18 points at the start of the fourth, but the Spartans opened the quarter on a 10-2 run to seal the game.
Junior center Felicia Aiyeotan missed her third straight game with an injury. Without Aiyeotan, the Cavaliers were again outrebounded 32-28 and the Spartans scored 48 points in the paint to Virginia’s 22.
Sophomore guard Brianna Tinsley led Virginia in scoring with a career-high 19 points, the second time in the last three games she scored at least 16 points. Junior small forward Jocelyn Willoughby posted her second straight double-double for the Cavaliers, with a career-high 16 points.
Virginia sophomore guard Khyasia Caldwell also scored a career-high nine points.
The Cavaliers have lost their last six ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, last earning in a win in 2012 against Minnesota.
Virginia will next play Sunday at home against Coppin State. The game tips off at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
