The Virginia women’s basketball team (11-17, 5-10 ACC) lost on the road to Virginia Tech (18-10, 5-10 ACC) by a score of 63-45 Thursday night.
Junior small forward Jocelyn Willoughby led the Cavaliers with 15 points — the only player in double figures for Virginia. Senior guard Taylor Emery scored a game-high 19 points for the Hokies while senior forward Regan Magarity scored 18.
Virginia Tech sophomore guard Aisha Sheppherd, Emery and freshman guard Dara Mabrey each hit three-pointers to give the Hokies a 9-0 lead to open the game. However, the Cavaliers closed the gap to 18-16 at the end of the quarter behind sophomore guard Khyasia Caldwell, who scored six of her nine points in the first.
The Cavaliers went ahead 21-20 with 8:09 to go in the second on a jumper by Caldwell, but Emery scored on the next possession to put Virginia Tech back on top and erase Virginia’s only lead of the game.
Virginia junior forward Shakyna Payne scored with 5:24 remaining in the second to tie the game at 24 apiece, but Virginia Tech went on a 9-0 run to close the half ahead 33-24.
In the third quarter, the Hokies built their lead up to as many as 17 points on a pair of free throws by Emery with 1:47 remaining. Virginia Tech led 47-30 at the end of the third.
Virginia narrowed the deficit to 9 points, 49-40, with 6:18 to play in the game on a three-pointer by junior guard Dominique Toussaint. However, the Hokies finished the game on a 14-5 run for the 63-45 win.
The Cavaliers close out their regular season schedule Sunday afternoon away at No. 4 Notre Dame. Tipoff will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Edmund P. Joyce Center.
